What a celebration of Scrum in Australia! As an organising team would like to wholeheartedly thank you for your high level of interaction and engagement at Scrum Australia 2013. We hope that you agree that this emphasis of “Individuals and Interactions over Podiums and Telling” is what makes the Regional Scrum Gathering experience special and so rewarding.

This blog post is to share with you some material from the conference including material from the sessions, photos and comments about the event as well as to thank everyone who made it such a rewarding event.

Quick Stats

Scrum Australia 2013 was the result of:

12+ months of planning, for
2 days of gathering, with
310 participants,
28 speakers, and
2,380 servings of food!

Photos

The photos below provide a visual record of the moments we shared. Can you find yourself in any of the shots? You might find these useful in explaining what the conference was like to colleagues who didn’t make it.

Many of the speakers have made material from their session available and we are delighted to be able to share it with the Scrum community via the “Session Material” page.

Open Space Material

Thanks for contributing to the capture of notes during the Open Space sessions you participated in. Thanks to this, we are able to share proceedings from a substantial proportion of the Open Space sessions. Download a summary of the proceedings.

Commentary about Scrum Australia 2013

Perhaps you found Scrum Australia 2013 to be valuable in other ways. If so, we’d love to hear about it via info@scrum.com.au

Thanks to our Sponsors

It was our sponsors who gave us the ‘shot in the arm’ that made the conference viable early on. For that, and your unwaivering support or a new and unproven conference, we are extremely grateful. A very special thanks to the Scrum Alliance, SMS Management & Technology, Atlassian, GLiNTECH, realestate.com.au, PM-Partners, Pantha Corp and onedot. A special thanks to the Scrum Alliance for making a contribution right from the start and for sending Carol from the other side of the world to open the event. Thanks to all of our sponsors for contributing to a particularly goodie-packed goodie bag!

Thanks to our Speakers

“Content is King” as the saying goes and this certainly applies to conferences. We were delighted that so many busy Scrum practitioners took time out from their holiday season to submit proposals for this inaugural event. The depth of knowledge and experience in the speaker line-up certainly demonstrated that Scrum is well and truly alive and well in Australia. Thanks to our speakers: Martin Kearns, Ilan Goldstein, Matthew Hodgson, Justin Urbanski, Jason Harwood, Craig Brown, Dimitri Spyridopoulos, Chris Mountford, Craig Smith, Matt Sharpe, Kane Mar, Alice Stratton, Fiona Pearce, Michael Rembach, Francisco Trinidade, Herry Wiputra, Rowan Bunning, David Martin, Adrian Fittolani, Dipesh Pala, Risto Pearce, Bernd Schiffer, Juliano Bersano, John Smart, Anton Roussow, Richard Banks, Lorraine Pauls-Longhurst, Paul Keen and Ian Gibson.

A very special thanks to Daniel Gu and Kenny Rubin for travelling from China and the USA to share their wisdom with us and answer every question we could find time for.

Next Year

Many of you asked whether there will be another event in 2014. The emphatic answer to this is: YES! The Scrum Australia organising team is committed to making this an annual event.

We will be making a series of announcements about the 2014 Scrum Australia event over the next few months. The best ways to keep in touch with this is to:

a) Subscribe to the Scrum Australia mailing list by submitting your email address at the bottom of the page at scrum.com.au, and

b) Follow @auscrum on Twitter

We look forward to seeing you next year!

Speakers announced and programme launched!

We have been inundated by the number and depth of submissions to present at Scrum Australia 2013. After many hours of considered discussion, we have arrived at our programme for Australia’s inaugural Scrum conference. We have worked hard to arrive at a programme that is balanced, practical and highlights the strength and maturity of Scrum in Australia.

You can view the programme by going to the Programme Schedule page.

Day 2 of our programme features an Open Space which encapsulates the self-organising spirit of Scrum! An Open Space is focused on discussion and conversation that attendees feel most passionate about. They have been a hallmark of many successful Scrum Alliance Global Gatherings from Atlanta to Barcelona with many participants relishing the flexible structure and opportunity to exchange ideas.

To ensure the best possible Open Space at Scrum Australia 2013, we are flying in a highly experienced Open Space facilitator in Alan Cyment from Argentina to lead this event. If you’ve never experienced the buzz of an Open Space before, make this your first!

The support keeps flowing in!

More and more organisations are getting behind Scrum Australia 2013 and lending their support for what promises to be a great event. We are proud to welcome SMS Management and Technology as a Platinum Sponsor. Joining them in their support is realestate.com.au and GLiNTECH who have signed on as Gold Sponsors as well as PM-Partners and PanthaCorp who have signed up as Silver sponsors.

We will be announcing other sponsors shortly so if you are thinking of getting behind Scrum Australia 2013, you’d better be quick or you’ll miss out! Contact us at sponsorship@scrum.com.au

Be quick for tickets!

We still have a few early-bird tickets so lock in your place for the conference at a great price. Going to a conference is always better with friends so we’ve also launched group tickets. Purchase more than 5 tickets and you get an even greater saving on the early-bird pricing! Go to scrum.com.au/tickets to find out more.

Scrum Australia – Call for Proposals

First round submissions close: December 31, 2012

We are delighted to announce that the proposal submission period is now open for the inaugural Scrum Australia conference to be held in Sydney on April 10-11, 2013.

Scrum Australia 2013 is Australia’s first ever Scrum conference with an anticipated attendance of 200-250 people. It is the first of a series of annual events to promote and enhance the visibility of Scrum in Australia. The Scrum Australia experience is based on the model of Scrum Gathering events which have been running around the world since 2004. For comments from delegates at previous Scrum Gathering events, see the short video at:http://tinyurl.com/scrumg
One of the main differentiators for Scrum Australia will be its wide variety of session formats. This opens up the opportunity for you to get your ideas across and create immersive learning experiences in a variety of formats including:

- In-depth Seminars on particular techniques and thinking tools (50 mins including Q&A)
- Experience Reports (tell your story relating to Scrum adoptions and real-world learnings)
- Hands-on Workshops (facilitate an immersive learning experience involving activities / group discussion)

Details of the three submission streams can be found on our ‘Programme Streams’ page.

Scrum Australia 2013 is being organised by Scrum practitioners, for Scrum practitioners. Each member of the organising team has practiced Scrum themselves for many years and wish to give back to the Scrum community. We hope that you will too.

Submit your proposal now by visiting our ‘Call for Proposals’ page.

If you have any questions about the conference or the proposal submission process, please contact us via programme@scrum.com.au

The first round session proposal period closes on December 31 so put your best foot forward before the New Year’s fireworks go off!

We look forward to receiving your proposal.
