Origins of Scrum

Posted by Kane Mar to 6 July, 03:50 AM

There’s an interesting discussion currently happening on the ScrumDevelopment mail list; Ken started it off with this post where he discusses the origins of Scrum. He makes it clear that empirical process control and not Lean, nor ToC (Theory of Constraints) were the inspiration behind Scrum.

“Lean thinking, theory of constraints, and the second law of thermodynamics. What do they all have in common? They all have been described as being the basis for and the root of Scrum … This isn’t true because Scrum didn’t originate in any of them. Instead, they have many similar insights that can be used to elucidate Scrum thinking, but they must be applied with common sense within the context.”

The discussions that follow are both insightful and frustrating at the same time. And just when I thought the rhetoric couldn’t get any thicker I saw this wonderful comment:

“Crickey! You are doin’ my head in, you are. This thread has become a rope, and a long one.”

Kudos to those of you who manage to keep up with the scrumdevelopment mailing list. I’ve got over 3,000 unread messages in that folder!
